I was born in London to Antipodean parents. I write fiction and creative non-fiction.
My debut novel This Road is Red was shortlisted for the Saltire First Book of the Year award. My second novel Cat Step was a BBC Radio 4 ‘Open Book’ Editor’s Choice. My non-fiction book Barrowland: the inside story of Glasgow’s beloved ballroom was published in November 2025 and my new novel Daughterhood will be published in June 2026.
I was Highly Commended in the 2024 Wigtown Book Festival Anne Brown Essay Prize for my non-fiction essay on Cumbernauld Town Centre. I’ve been the recipient of a Scottish Arts Council New Writer’s Award as well as Creative Scotland funding to support several writing projects.
My writing has been published widely including in New Writing Scotland, The Edinburgh Review, Gutter, Mslexia, The Herald, The Guardian and The Big Issue.
I am the writer in the artist collective Recollective www.recollective.org.uk and I work regularly with photographer Chris Leslie and illustrator Mitch Miller.
I live in Glasgow with my husband and two of my three daughters and I work as a trainer for the Scottish Book Trust’s Reading is Caring programme, training carers and health professionals to use shared reading with people living with dementia. I also teach creative writing, edit and proofread for two publishing houses and work behind the bar at the world’s great music venue, the Barrowland Ballroom.
